Day 1 – Arrive in Geneva
Geneva, Switzerland
Welcome to Switzerland! Upon arrival at the airport, meet your Enrichment Journey guide, who will assist with transferring you to the hotel. After check-in, you’ll have time to get settled in and relax before joining your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner. (D)
Note: if you wish to spend more time in Geneva, ask your Personal Vacation Manager about the optional hotel extension – which will add a night to your Geneva hotel stay
Day 2 – Geneva to Montreux
Chateau de Chillon
Start the day with a tour of the city. An elegant city center surrounded by natural beauty, Geneva is the perfect blend of history, culture and modern luxury. While walking along the cobblestone streets we will pass outdoor cafés, designer stores, historic monuments and extravagant hotels. Our tour will end at the shore of Lake Geneva, where we will board a vessel for a leisurely cruise along the lake. After some free time for lunch, we will board the coach and make our way along the shore to one of Switzerland’s most famous castles, Chateau de Chillon. Built on an island at the edge of the lake, this medieval fortress was once a Roman outpost that guarded the Alpine passes. It later served as a summer home to the House of Savoy, and throughout the centuries has undergone various restorations. After exploring the castle, we will then be escorted to the castle’s wine cellars to enjoy a tasting of their wines. Depart the castle and head to the nearby town of Montreux, our home for the next two nights. After a walk around the town center, we will check in to the hotel and tuck into a well-deserved dinner! (B, D)
Day 3 – Montreux
Montreux, Switzerland
Today we will indulge in the culinary delights of Switzerland! Our first stop will be the Gruyere Cheese Factory, where we will observe a demonstration and sample this regional specialty. The master cheese-makers at this factory produce up to 48 wheels of Gruyere a day! The cheese is produced from the milk of 36 local farmers whose cows graze upon the lush grass and fragrant flora of the alpine meadows. After visiting the factory we will proceed to lunch in town. This area is where Charlie Chaplin lived for 25 years, near the town of Vevey along the banks of Lake Geneva.
Swiss Chocolates
It was also here in Vevey that milk chocolate was first developed in the nineteenth century, creating a delicious trend that captured global attention. To celebrate one of Switzerland’s greatest inventions, we will finish our day at a local chocolatier for a demonstration and tasting of some of the finest Swiss chocolates! Enjoy the rest of the evening at your leisure. (B, L)
Day 4 – Montreux to Zermatt
Zermatt, Switzerland
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to the quaint village of Zermatt. As there are no motorized vehicles in the town, our transfer will include a short train ride. Perhaps one of the most famous destinations in Switzerland, Zermatt is a fairy-tale town set against the backdrop of the jagged Matterhorn. Once we arrive, we will take a cable car from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn (“Little Matterhorn”), which rests between the Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa massif, which contains the highest mountain peak in the Swiss Alps. You will have some free time to walk along the outdoor platform and indoor panoramic windows, which offer spectacular views of the Matterhorn, the glaciers and the Monte Rosa. Then, travel 50 feet below the surface of the glacier to explore the Glacier Palace, where icy walkways are lined with beautifully illuminated ice sculptures. Today’s lunch will be served at the world’s highest mountain restaurant, where you can further enjoy the views as you dine. Return back to Zermatt where you’ll have the evening at your leisure. (B, L)
Day 5 – Zermatt to Beatenberg
Interlaken, Switzerland
Departing Zermatt we will head north along a scenic route towards Interlaken, a picturesque town that straddles two glacier-fed lakes, surrounded by the Burnese Alps. The drive will take a few hours but is incredibly beautiful so keep your cameras ready and enjoy the views. Once in Interlaken, you will have a couple of hours of free time to go for a stroll, have lunch on your own and do some shopping. Then, your guide will lead a short walking tour around the center of the town. By the late afternoon, we will head to your luxurious hotel overlooking Lake Thun and Interlaken. This mountainside hotel will serve as a welcome respite for you to relax, unwind and enjoy the stunning views. Tonight’s dinner will be at one of the hotel restaurants. (B, D)
Day 6 – Beatenberg
Electric Train on the Bernese Alps
Today we will conquer Jungfraujoch, the “Top of Europe” platform between the peaks of Jungfrau and Monch in the Bernese Alps. This area lies within the UNESCO Natural World Heritage property of “Jungfrau – Aletsch – Bietschhorn”. Our first stop along the way is at Trummelbach Falls, a series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls in a cave-like environment. Then, prepare for an adventure as we embark on a rack railway to the highest railway station in Europe.
Grindelwald, Switzerland
Once at the top, the view is astounding. Icy air streams across your face, snow crunches under your feet, and the view nearly takes your breath away. On one side is the view of the Mittelland up to the Vosges, on the other the Aletsch glacier, bordered by 13,000-foot peaks. You will have free time to take it all in, explore the exhibitions and enjoy lunch. On the way back down the mountain, we will go a different route, ending in Grindelwald. Head back to the hotel where we’ll warm back up with a cozy dinner. (B, D)
Day 7 – Beatenberg to Lucerne
Cableway over Lake Lucerne
Today we will depart Beatenberg and travel to the famous Lake Lucerne, taking the long route over a nearby mountain that offers panoramic views of the lake from above. At the town of Alpnachstad, we will board the world’s steepest cogwheel train, which will take us up through the rock faces, passing mountain streams and lush meadows. At the summit of Mt. Pilatus, you will have free time to admire the panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and surrounding mountains. To get down the mountain we will take an aerial cableway and then switch to a gondola, both of which offer different perspectives of the views from their large windows. This afternoon we will discover the town of Lucerne, which rests on the calming banks of the lake. Enjoy a walking tour of the town center and then check in to your hotel for the evening.
Traditional Swiss Cowbells
On the last night of our tour we will say farewell with a celebration of Swiss cuisine! Hearty dishes await you in a traditional Swiss atmosphere. Enjoy the delicious food and local beer in a cozy setting while you reminisce with your fellow travelers over your alpine adventure. (B, D)
Day 8 – Lucerne and Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland
This morning we will travel to Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland. Undoubtedly an important financial hub, Zurich also has an abundance of historical and cultural institutions and is often ranked among the world’s top cities in terms of quality of life. Your guide will lead you on a walking tour of the Altstadt (Old Town) and surrounding area. You will then have some free time to walk around, grab lunch at a local café and do some last-minute shopping before returning to your hotel in Lucerne. (B)
Day 9 – Lucerne to Basel for Embarkation
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and transfer to the port in Basel where you will board the Viking Sigyn for a 7-night cruise along the Rhine River. (B)
Day 10–15 – Cruising onboard the Viking Sigyn (see below for cruise highlights)
Day 16 – Amsterdam Disembarkation
Enjoy breakfast onboard, then disembark the Viking Sigyn and transfer to the airport for your return flight home.
Note: if you wish to spend more time in Amsterdam, ask your Personal Vacation Manager about adding an Amsterdam hotel stay to your Journey.
For meals not included in your land programs, all hotels chosen include a restaurant on property where you may relax and enjoy a meal. In addition, your guide is available to make suggestions on nearby dining, shopping or sightseeing.
Basel, Switzerland
Basel, Switzerland: Located along the Rhine River, Basel sits at the point where French, German and Swiss borders meet, marking the gateway to the Swiss Rhineland. Its medieval old town centers around Marktplatz, dominated by the 16th-century, red-sandstone Town Hall. Its 12th-century Gothic cathedral has city views and contains the tomb of the 16th-century Dutch scholar, Erasmus. The city’s university houses some of Erasmus’ works.
Breisach, Germany
Breisach, Germany: Breisach is located in one of the warmest parts of Germany, next to Alsace, which is famous for its wine-growing. Look up “charming and “picturesque” in the dictionary and it could very well show images of today’s choice of destinations—two of Alsace’s best-known wine villages or a town some have hailed as the prettiest in the world. A charming town dominated by a 17th-century hilltop cathedral, Breisach is your gateway to the Alsatian wine road.
Strasbourg, France
Strasbourg, France: Strasbourg is invariably described as quaint, a rather overused word that in this case is perfectly apropos. Whether you see it via a canal boat or on foot with an insightful local expert, this historic town with its cobbled lanes, half-timbered homes, giant stork nests and impossible-to-resist pastry shops will win your heart. Thanks to its location at the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg boasts a convivial mix of cultural influences.
Speyer, Germany
Speyer, Germany: Expect the unexpected in Speyer, where ancient treasures harmoniously co-exist with modern-day innovation. Speyer’s charming, shop-lined main street is overlooked by the impressive clock tower of its Altpörtel, the Old Town Gate.
Niederwald Monument
Koblenz and Rudesheim, Germany: On a breathtaking stretch of the Rhine that leads from medieval Koblenz to Braubach to Rüdesheim, the 13th-century Marksburg Castle towers over the river. Rüdesheim has a long history going back to Roman times and is famous for the Drosselgasse, a narrow, bustling lane of shops and wine bars, as well as its impressive Niederwald Monument, built to celebrate the re-establishment of the German empire in the late 19th century.
Cruising out of Rüdesheim you’ll enter the sublimely beautiful Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Byron described it as “a work divine, a blending of all beauties.” Turner painted it. Wagner used it as inspiration for his opera Götterdämmerung. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this scenic 40-mile (65-kilometer) stretch of the Rhine features a stunning, castle-dotted landscape that many 19th-century composers, painters and poets considered the embodiment of an ideal romantic spirit. Each bend and twist of the river affords new delights: Steep riverbanks are graced with sloping vineyards and picturesque towns, and hilltops are crowned by fairytale castles. Each one of those castles tells a tale: of great families raising fortresses against each other, of warfare and ruin and rebuilding through the centuries. Some castles have been entirely reconstructed; others tower above the water in majestic ruin, still an inspiration for romantics.
Marksburg Castle
No other river valley on earth boasts more castles than the Rhine, and today you’ll have an opportunity to experience real-life “Game of Thrones” ambiance deep within the medieval walls of Marksburg Castle. Not into dungeons and dragons? Get to know Koblenz, a historic town with a colorful past and eclectic architecture and enjoy a scenic bike ride. As you come upon Koblenz, you’ll sail past Deutsches Eck (German Corner) with its historic monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I, at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers.
Cologne Cathedral
Cologne, Germany: An intriguing mix of old and new, Cologne reveals its Roman heritage in the city layout and ancient ruins that lie scattered through the town. You simply cannot visit Cologne without paying homage to its most notorious site, the Gothic masterpiece that serves as the city’s cathedral. Visit favorite haunts around the Old Town and learn some of the cathedral’s most intriguing and magical secrets. Cologne is the largest and oldest city of the Rhineland and a cultural mecca, with more than 30 museums and hundreds of art galleries. A congenial atmosphere and a mix of ancient, modern and reconstructed buildings characterize the heart of this city.
Kinderdijk, Netherlands
Kinderdijk, Netherlands: The South Holland village community of Kinderdijk includes a set of 19 windmills, 3 pumping stations, plus dikes, reservoirs and other ingenious technologies built in the 18th century to control flooding in the polder (low-lying land). Waterways, footpaths and bike trails crisscross the area, leading to the main visitor’s center and museums in preserved working windmills.
Canals of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam, Netherlands: Few cities can match the sophistication and picture-perfect beauty of Amsterdam. Artsy travelers will love the city’s emphasis on fine artists like Van Gogh, Vermeer, and Rembrandt, whose works are displayed at museums across the city. Hop on a rented bike and explore the city on two wheels, whether you’re riding along the canal or going windmill spotting across the city. On your cruise, you’ll discover this is a place that embodies a slower lifestyle, where enjoying simple pleasures is part of the daily routine.
Pacing
Most days during the land portion will include full-day tours. The overall pace is rather quick, as there is much to see in these regions, however, there is a healthy mix of both visits to historical sites and time to enjoy the landscape and scenery. Most days include two meals, allowing the third meal to be at your leisure. All hotels will have a restaurant on the property where you may dine, then have the rest of the evening to relax. If you wish to go out, your guide is available to make suggestions for nearby dining.
During the cruise, you will have a mix of relaxing days at sea and exciting days on land to explore the port cities. You may choose from optional shore excursions, which will allow for cultural immersion, exotic meals and numerous activities.

The land portion of the trip should be considered active and includes a considerable amount of walking. Enrichment Journeys will do everything in our power to ensure comfort through our third-party providers, including air-conditioned buses and comfortable accommodations where applicable. However, some areas cannot be accessed by coach, so our drivers will get you as close to sites as is legally allowed. Sensible, rubber-soled walking shoes are strongly recommended. Historical sites often do not have elevators, escalators or ramps due to the age of the building/structure. Steps can be steep and uneven. Wheelchair access at many sites is limited to extremely limited. Based on crowds and traffic, order of visits may be changed. A fold-up wheelchair may be able to be stored on the bus but requires prior arrangements. Motorized wheelchairs and scooters cannot be accommodated on this group program. Guests must be able to transfer from their chair to the transportation. Guides/drivers are not allowed to lift or push wheelchairs, so guests requiring physical assistance must travel with a companion who can assist. For the cruise portion of the trip, passengers will board and leave the ship up stairways and gangways, and you may have to walk a moderate distance to transfer to train, bus and car stations. Time spent on the road and traveling can be long, so you will need to be prepared for stretches of down time in between destinations.
Cultural Focus
Nestled within the tallest mountains of Europe, Switzerland has developed its own unique culture. On this Journey, you will enjoy an introduction to Swiss folkloric music, dancing and costumes, admire Alpine architecture and experience the culinary delights of the region, including cheeses, wines, chocolates and more. During your cruise you will explore the towns along the Rhine River, including shore excursions in every port. You will encounter dishes and ingredients typical to the region that you may not have encountered before, and you will be introduced to the local artistry of the region. Enrichment Journeys encourages an open mind when in unique situations and meeting people abroad. Sometimes the attractions, beaches and cities themselves can be crowded, especially while on the cruise.
Unique Factors
Please note much of this Journey is at a significant altitude above sea level; shortness of breath and fatigue may occur. At these altitudes the temperature is significantly lower than that of the valleys, so be sure to pack warm layers. If you have special needs or physical limitations, you will need to check in with your personal vacation manager before booking the trip. The temperature can vary between day and night, so pack accordingly with items that can be layered. Some guests may wish to have a light sweater or windbreaker with them.

Ship Features
Money Matters
How you handle your currency and financials while on the trip is up to you. Some people prefer to exchange all their money in advance, while others will rely solely on credit cards. Consider calling your bank ahead of time to make them aware of your international travel, especially when using cards or withdrawing money.
ATM Machines
These are often readily available, especially in major cities. Some will charge fees on top of what your hometown bank may charge for using ATMs abroad. Look for well-marked machines that have the Visa or MasterCard symbols.
Foreign Banks
Currency can be exchanged at most banks, if needed. Ask a local host or tour manager if there is a nearby bank that is open.
Credit Cards
During your trip, you’ll find that most major credit cards are accepted. Call your specific card issuer ahead of time to find out its limitations and benefits overseas.
Incidentals
Do be aware that some additional charges for mini-bars, laundry and room service will not be included in the tour package. Plan accordingly for these extra charges.
Packing Guidelines
Pack as simply as possible for easy transfers and customs screenings. Check with your domestic and international carriers regarding baggage guidelines, allowances, and check for additional fees. All bags will be screened before boarding flights and the cruise ship.
What to pack
Basics and layers are key to a comfortable Journey. Be sure to check the weather in the destinations you will visit, and pack accordingly. There are always unpredictable variables as well, so make sure you have one sturdy jacket and an outfit for a formal occasion too, just in case.
Here are a few key items to take on your trip:
Have back-ups for everything to avoid disappointment. Charge batteries in advance and bring extra film or digital memory cards. If bringing a high-end camera, consider investing in insurance to protect your asset.
Luggage Screening Process
To pass through screening, have liquids either in small containers and bagged, or in checked luggage. All valuables necessary for the trip should be on your person at all times, if possible. This includes medications and documentation. We recommend one main bag and a carry-on, per airline guidelines for weight and size.
Labeling
Have all your bags labeled with your name and address clearly marked. Add something to you luggage that is recognizable in the event your bags are misplaced. You may also consider marking your bags with “Enrichment Journeys” for efficiency.
Carry-on items
In many countries, including the US, large liquid containers are not allowed in carry-ons. On the way back into The States, food or agriculture items are prohibited. If you have questions about a certain item, visit www.tsa.gov for a list of items that cannot be packed.
Airport transfers
Airport transfers are included as part of your Enrichment Journey. Local representatives will advise you of the departure time from your hotel the night before departure. Generally speaking, arrangements have been made to have you at the airport approximately three hours in advance of departure, though this may vary depending on local circumstances. At the end of the cruise, an airport transfer will also be provided. Please advise your Personal Vacation Manager if you do not require transfer arrangements at the time of booking your Journey.
Cell phones
Some cell phones will work overseas, but incur additional charges for the use. Choose whether you would like to add an international plan by calling your carrier, or consider purchasing a pay-as-you-go phone overseas. However, in some destinations, many smartphones and tablets can pick up wireless Internet for free.
Protecting the Value of Your Travel Investment
Enrichment Journeys offers a comprehensive travel insurance package you can purchase alongside your trip. It eases the mind and lets you cancel your trip for a covered reason up until the departure date with a full refund of the Journey.
The insurance covers a wide variety of incidents, including travel delay, emergency medical services, and even baggage delay. You will also receive a pre-existing medical conditions waiver if travel insurance is purchased within 14 days of your initial deposit. For a full list of coverage provided, visit the FAQ section of the website.
Medical Issues and Handicaps
As with any extensive trip abroad, our excursions with Enrichment Journeys will require some physical capabilities, including transfers from cruise ships, walking on cobblestone streets and navigating through some busy cities with guides. Although we encourage all types of travelers to join us, we do ask you are aware of your own physical limitations. Unfortunately, we cannot provide individual care to those who may have walkers, wheelchairs or other aids. Per the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, travelers have the right to be reasonably accommodated in terms of tours in public situations. However, the laws do not apply for trips and outside the United States. So you must let Enrichment Journeys know ahead of time of any physical limitations, including information added to our questionnaire that needs to be filled out by all passengers. Failure to inform Enrichment Journeys of these limitations could result in refusal to participate, whether it be at the airport through the airline, on board the ship or at the accommodations booked.
If you have any sort of prescription medication, this should be a number one priority in packing. Bring extra, just in case. A small medical kit is also advisable for quick access to remedy minor aches and pains.
Briefing sessions
A local host or tour manager will be happy to guide you through the trip and answer all of your questions. Upon arrival to your destination, an Enrichment Journeys representative will meet with the group and go over items such as the daily schedule, weather and local customs.
Hotels
All hotels booked by Enrichment Journeys are held to a high standard of comfort and quality, in accordance to international accommodation standards and rating systems. However, each accommodation varies so you may experience various types of properties throughout your excursions.
Travel Documentation
Have your passport and visas ready and available at all checkpoints. Scan and copy these documents to print out. It is recommended that you e-mail a copy to yourself and someone back home in the event these documents are misplaced. Also, it may be worth bringing an international ID or license.
Passport and Visa
To travel internationally, you must have a passport in good condition, and it must be valid for at least 6 months after the last day of your trip. Visa requirements change frequently and for various reasons. As a result, our Personal Vacation Managers are not always able to provide visa information, and you should not rely on the information provided below to be the most current and accurate. The best way to obtain up-to-date information regarding visa requirements is to visit the official US government website for Americans traveling abroad, Travel.State.Gov, (Canadian citizens should visit https://travel.gc.ca/, for all other countries please visit your government website or local embassy), which details specific information on the countries you would like to visit, including visa requirements.
You may also use a third-party visa service, such as CIBTvisas. These services require an additional service fee but make the process of applying for a visa much simpler.
Note: as of March 2022, U.S. and Canadian passport holders traveling to Europe’s Schengen Zone in 2023 may need to obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETIAS). This is subject to change and Enrichment Journeys recommends all travelers to double-check this information as it gets closer to departure. More information can be found at https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/etias/
Vaccinations
Vaccinations are recommended to protect one’s health from preventable diseases abroad. It is always good to have routine vaccinations up to date when traveling for ailments such as chickenpox, measles, and the flu shot. Use your own discretion when deciding on what vaccinations to have based on your preferences and personal medical history. During your Enrichment Journeys tour, the utmost care will be taken with prepared food, atmosphere and other elements, so the likelihood of contracting diseases is scarce.
For a list of recommended vaccinations based on destination, visit https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel or feel free to contact the Center for Disease Control and Prevention directly at 1-800-232-4636.
Electric Current
You will need an adaptor for some parts of your trip. To see what the plugs will look like at your destination, visit https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com/ and click on each country from the right menu.
You may also need to use a converter. Most countries outside of North and Central America use 220-240 V, whereas the U.S. and Canada use 110 V. However, most chargers these days have a box that will act as a converter so that it can be used in all countries around the world. If your charger box says “Input: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz” then you do NOT need to use a converter (but you may still need an adaptor so that the plugs fit in the socket).
Some hotels may have two and three-pronged outlets to use for various appliances. Ship cabins also have outlets for you to use with their converter. However, we recommend having at least one or two adaptors with you, as we cannot guarantee that all hotels will be able to accommodate this.
Local Currency
France, Germany and the Netherlands use the Euro (€), currency code EUR
Switzerland uses the Switzerland Franc, also known as the Swiss Franc (Fr., CHf or SFr.), currency code CHF
The United Kingdom uses the Pound Sterling, also known as the British Pound (£), currency code GBP
Iceland uses the Icelandic Krona (kr), currency code ISK
Please visit https://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/ for the current exchange rate.
How you handle your currency and financials while on the trip is up to you. Some people prefer to exchange all their money in advance, while others will rely solely on credit cards. We suggest having at least some local currency with you during the trip, at least enough to take a taxi if needed. Consider calling your bank ahead of time to make them aware of your international travel, especially when using cards or withdrawing money.
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is always appreciated but not always required. Expect several instances throughout the hospitality industry that allow for tipping. Have small bills ready for hotel staff, boat crew, restaurant servers, drivers, guides, and baggage handlers. If you have a meal outside the itinerary or hire a resident driver, a few dollars in the local currency is customary.
Gratuities are included for group meals, at hotels, and at airports. The host, guide, or tour manager can be tipped roughly $8.00-$12.00 USD per person, per day. Drivers can be tipped $5 USD per person, per day. Onboard the ship, gratuities are already included when sailing with Celebrity Cruises.
For more information about when and how much to tip in each country, feel free to speak with your tour guide at the start of your Journey. A good reference for international tipping is https://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2008-11-11/etiquette-101-tipping-guide.
